Most house and building owners in Alcoa TN feel relatively safe in their homes. Generally, air pollution is not a problem in Blount County, Tennessee. However, radon gas is a significant problem in our community and is the single greatest health threat to Alcoa TN families. Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that results from the breakdown of radioactive uranium, thorium and radium. Toxic radon poisoning is responsible for more deaths every year than drunk driving, AIDS, slip & falls, and murders. Radon is commonly detected in random air samples and is generally harmless when encountered outdoors. However, radon that rises into a structure from the soil or rock beneath the basement, crawl space, or foundation slab may become concentrated indoors and reach dangerously high levels. When this occurs, it can cause health issues, even lung cancer, in individuals who regularly occupy the structure.

Radium, thorium and uranium are naturally occurring elements that are commonly found in soil, bedrock and groundwater sources across the United States, including here in Alcoa TN. The widespread prevalence of these substances means that radon gas is an issue faced by many home and commercial property owners. Studies show that radon can enter a home via cracks and other small openings in its foundation. For this reason, it might be a good idea to find ways to improve ventilation and overall airflow, which can move the toxic air back outside rather than having it linger around inside the home.

Radon Testing & Mitigation in Alcoa TN Homes

Radon testing is of utmost importance to ensure the safety of your home and your loved ones. Every home should be tested for radon exposure, as elevated levels can pose serious health risks. Take action today and learn more about the importance of radon testing by visiting the CDC’s website.

Without testing, most Alcoa property owners aren’t aware of the presence of radon gas until someone who lives in their household or works in their business develops serious health problems. Short-term tests for radon are conducted over a period of two to seven days while long-term tests measure the levels of radon for 90 days or longer. Information gathered from both types of tests is valuable in determining the extent of the gas’s potential impact on the property and its inhabitants. These tests are available in home improvement “big box” stores, such as Lowe’s and Home Depot, and in some Alcoa TN hardware stores. When radon levels are 4 pCi/L or higher, radon mitigation is recommended.

Tests are conducted by placing a small canister, cardboard strip, or digital measurement device in the lowest level of the structure where the gas is most likely to accumulate. The collection kit is left in one location for the specified amount of time and is then collected and processed to determine the level of radon that was present during the testing period. The residents or workers who occupy the property are asked to reduce exterior ventilation as much as possible during the test, but no other input or actions are required. We realize it can often be difficult to keep all windows closed, especially during hot Alcoa, Tennessee summers, but this is very important to assess accurate results. Once we’ve determined the presence and level of radon in a structure, our team can then offer a range of mitigation options that are tailored to the specific situation.

If Your Home Has Elevated Radon Levels, Don’t Panic! In Alcoa TN Radon Mitigation Systems are Very Common.

Due to radon’s radioactive characteristics and the serious health problems associated with long-term radon exposure, Alcoa property owners should take immediate steps to mitigate even moderate levels of radon gas in their buildings. According to Graceanne Wills, radiation exposure causes more fatalities every year than any other environmental pollutant. “As of the writing of this article, there is no medical test capable of measuring how much radon is in a person’s body. There is also no proven medical treatment that can remove the toxic gas from the body.”

At SWAT Environmental of Alcoa TN, we supply an array of radon removal options that are designed to prevent radon entry into the dwelling. Our mitigation systems operate by creating a vacuum in the soil beneath or immediately adjacent to the structure. This negative pressure draws any radon that is present upwards through the connected piping instead of entering the building’s basement, crawl space, or living area. The gas is then safely released through a vent above the roofline.

Our Alcoa TN Customers Rave About Our Top-Notch Staff & Service:

“Jeffery was great. The job was very good. Upon completion of the install, Initial Vacuum Pressure was 0.8. When I finished my follow-up, Vacuum Pressure was 1.4. Why the big difference? For a number of reasons. Large gaps between the basement slab and the poured concrete foundation wall were filled with Dow Great Stuff Insulating Foam Sealant. The following day, when I removed the excess expanded Foam Sealant, there were many opening where the foam did not travel down into the opening. So, in order to rectify this, I went to Lowe’s and purchased five (5) tubes of Sika 29-oz Self Leveling (flowable) Sealant, which I applied to all joints which were initially filled with expandable foam. That amounted to about 70% of the basement perimeter. The other 30% was caulked with Loctite Premium Construction Adhesive, which seemed to be adequate. I personally did the application of the construction adhesive. And I must say that I did not do that great of a job. The next day, when I checked, I had gaps where the air was being drawn under the slab into the radon remediation system. I applied more adhesive. That solved that problem. When I finished with the perimeter, there was still air being drawn under the slab. Well, it turned out that I had two (2) waste pipes stubbed in the slab, both surrounded by stone, but not covered with the concrete slab. I corrected that today. Now the Vacuum Pressure is up to 1.4. Tomorrow I will finish the job when I close a few remaining small, hard to access gaps between the slab and the wall. I have had two (2) previously owned houses radon remediated. In both cases, flowable caulk was used. I was surprised that Swat did not take that route to seal the perimeter. But, hey, what do I know. You guys are the pros. If Dow Great Stuff Insulating Foam Sealant is what you use to seal the perimeter, I was not going to protest. The Great Stuff is still in the gap. It is functioning as backer rod. So, it is ok.Just two (2) other bits of feedback. I would have liked to see a varmint guard installed at the top of the stack. And, to check air being drawn under the slab, I used an incense stick. It created a little smoke, which you can see going into a crack or gap, and it has a pleasant fragrance. I bought smoldering “punk” sticks from a fireworks store in order to create smoke for testing air direction, but I changed my mind when my wife told me she had incense sticks. All in all, it was a very good job, although I think there is room for improvement. Bottom line – I would recommend you. Thumbs up.” – I. Szabo, Alcoa

“fast service and fair price for job very good work and professional ” – W. Pena, Alcoa
