Install a radon mitigation system before your build is complete
There is often a question of whether newly constructed residential and commercial buildings need to have a radon mitigation system installed. As families across the country become more aware of the health hazards caused by radon exposure, builders search for cost effective ways to deliver smarter, safer homes.
Whether it is a new house, multi-family unit or commercial building, there may an assumption that radon is not a risk. Once the roof has been installed and the building has been sealed, radon gas becomes trapped and begins accumulating in the building putting those living and working inside the building at risk of radon exposure.
Since radon develops from the soil and can penetrate through the foundation, new construction risk is revealed when the building is sealed. When roof, walls and windows are installed, the radon can longer escape, builds up and puts occupants at risk of radon exposure.
Advantages of installation before construction is complete
- Simple installation. Walls, windows, foundations are exposed making installation easy.
- Cost Savings. With exposed components of the build, there is little to no patching and entry points, collection points and venting can be installed efficiently.
- No radon exposure for occupants. Until the building is sealed, a true radon test cannot be performed because radon (if present) has easy escaped into the atmosphere. By installing a passive or active radon mitigation system, you are well-equipped to quickly draw radon from the building if your test results show high-levels of radon.

Why Choose SWAT Environmental?
Since 1988, we have worked with builders to ensure the safety and satisfaction of their clients. We are proud to offer:
• Access to one vendor solution across state, regions and nationally
• Consistent installation and management
• Design and implementation assistance
• Knowledge of Appendix F or RRNC compliant depending on area/project requirements
• Installations performed by technicians certified and trained* according to EPA, American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologies (AARST) and the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP)
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a radon mitigation system can easily be installed during the building process. In fact, it is often easier to install a radon mitigation system during the building process rather than after the home is finished because the piping can easily be concealed within a wall and the vent pipe can exit the roof rather than the side of the home allowing for optimal aesthetics. If you are working with a contractor, encourage them to contact SWAT Environmental to help you with the radon mitigation installation process.
There are several different types of radon mitigation methods, each specifically designed for different homes. Since you will be building your own home, we will work with the contractor to come up with the best design and method to reduce the amount of radon gas.
