About Sioux City Iowa

Sioux City, Iowa is located in the far northwest portion of the state, and is is the fourth most populous city in the state, with about 82,684 people in the 2010 census. The city is at the northernmost navigable point on the Missouri river, also called the navigational head. In 2010, Sioux City was cited by Money Magazine as one of the best places to live in America. The city was recognized by Forbes as being in the top 15 cities in the United States in which to form a small business or start a career.

The Iowa city was on the route of the Lewis and Clark expedition and was inhabited by the Sioux Indians when the Lewis and Clark expedition came through the area in 1804. The city is located in the tallgrass prairie of the Great Plains of North America. The city proper was established during the winter of 1854-55 and was a major waypoint of the Mormons heading west as well as prospectors on their way to the gold fields in Wyoming.

The main employer is Tyson Foods which employs approximately 4700 plus employees and which relies on local farmers for livestock to process and process for sale to wholesalers. Close proximity to the Missouri river provides easy transport.

Other employers include Mercy Medical Center, Morningside College, the Sioux City Community School District, the 185th Air Refueling Wing of the US Air Force, Tri-State Nursing and MidAmerican Energy.

The city has a good mix of recreational and civic projects that give residents a good lifestyle and plenty to do in their spare time. The city bandshell hosts concerts during the summer months and the Art Center downtown hosts paintings and works of art from all over the midwest.

Just north of the downtown area is Grandview Park which hosts the Bandshell and a large rose garden. This is a great place to live if you enjoy small town peace and quiet along with great neighbors.
