About Mahopac New York

Mahopac New York lies in Putnam County. The region was originally peopled by the Wappinger, a branch of the Native American Algonquian tribe, most of whom were forced to desert the land after the England took it from them. With the Wappinger gone, the area began to be bought and settled by white settlers. Putnam's Lake Secor is named after the first white family to own part of the land of Putnam. In these early days, most of these white settlers were German immigrants. It was not until the 1950's that persons of German ancestry were not in the obvious majority.

The region of Putnam upon which Mahopac New York lies was founded by Adolphus Philipse in 1697. Mahopac New York was named after an Algonquin phrase for “snake river.” Soon after, farmers, wheelwrights, and blacksmiths began arriving and Mahopac New York began growing. During the Revolutionary War, Mahopac New York was an important crossroads between multiple garrisons. It was also important because it manufactured grain and flour for the troops. However, unfortunately the Tory-sympathizing Philipse family lost all personal claim to any of the land in the region. After that, the farmers were given full ownership of the town. Mahopac New York is in Putnam County which was incorporated in 1812. This was a positive development which led to Mahopac New York becoming a popular summer resort by the middle of the century.

Today Mahopac New York has approximately 8,478 inhabitants. It remains home to several popular tourist attractions such as the Carmel Historical Society Museum, Mahopac Falls, Lake Mahopac, Lake Secor, The Trailside Nature Museum, Hammond Museum & Japanese Stroll Garden, Washington Headquarters Monument, John Jay Homestead Historical Site, Blue Mountain Reservation, Ward Pound Ridge Reservation and Bartlett Arboretum. And these attractions of Mahopac New York are easily accessible via the near proximity of John F. Kennedy International.
