About Frankfort Kentucky

Located in the state's north central Bluegrass region, Frankfort Kentucky, is a city whose origins date back to 1786. Early settler and frontiersman Stephen Frank died at the hands of Indians near a well-traveled crossing point on the Kentucky River in 1780. In time, Frank's Ford was shortened to Frankfort. Today Frankfort Kentucky, serves as the state capital, a distinction it has had since 1792.

Eight of the state's oldest most notable historic buildings are in Frankfort Kentucky. The two oldest of these are the Old Governor's Mansion and Liberty Hall both built in 1796.

Visit the cemetery in Frankfort Kentucky, to explore not only the gravesites of seventeen of the state's governors but also the huge monument marking the graves of Daniel and Rebecca Boone. From this site you can see much of the city.

Even though the state's intention to align itself with the Union was declared at Frankfort Kentucky, this 228-year-old city was in the possession of both the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War. One of the places to visit with direct ties to the Civil War is Leslie Morris Park at Fort Hill.

Frankfort Kentucky is home to a 'Singing Bridge.' The St. Clair Street Bridge built in 1894 over the Kentucky River has a grated surface which hums with the traffic flow over it.
