About Chattanooga Tennessee

Chattanooga Tennessee is the fourth largest city in Tennessee and home to over 171,000 residents. The city is located on the Tennessee River in the eastern part of the state. Chattanooga Tennessee is about 120 miles from Atlanta, Georgia, 135 miles from Knoxville, Tennessee and 120 miles from Nashville, Tennessee. The city is known for its mountainous surroundings as it is situated in a valley of the Appalachian Mountains. Chattanooga State Community College and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga are located in the city.

Native Americans, specifically the Cherokee, originally inhabited the land in Chattanooga Tennessee. After Europeans began to settle in the United States, the United States government forced the Native Americans out of the land and to Native American territories in Oklahoma. The city was also part of the American Civil War. In late 1893 occurred a series of battles known as the Battles for Chattanooga.

Several companies are headquartered in Chattanooga Tennessee including BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, Craftworks Restaurants and Breweries, Unum and the world’s first Coca-Cola bottling plant. Many other companies have distribution and manufacturing facilities in the city. In recent years tourism has become a large part of Chattanooga Tennessee’s economy. The city is home to many museums including the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum and Creative Discovery Museum. In 2005 construction was completed on a $120 million redevelopment of the Chattanooga Tennessee downtown and waterfront area which aimed to make the area a vibrant city corridor for businesses and residents. The waterfront area and Tennessee Aquarium bring patrons to the downtown district to enjoy the attractions and activities in the area. The Chattanooga Zoo is also located near downtown. Chattanooga Tennessee also boasts an array of all-season outdoor activities. In 1962 Chattanooga Tennessee was named an All-America City and has also held Tree City USA recognition since 1990.
